Breakthrough: Though she formed the R&B group Sista in 1990 and inked a deal with Jodeci member DeVante Swing’s Swing Mob label as a part of the group, Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott quickly stood out on her own and helped pen songs for Jodeci’s two final albums. After the label folded, she began working alongside childhood friend and producer Timbaland to produce songs for SWV, 702 and Aaliyah. But she got her big break in 1997 when she dropped her solo debut Supa Dupa Fly (Goldmind/Elektra), featuring the hit single “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).” The album was the first of six solo Missy albums to go platinum, the most one female rapper has ever achieved.
Now You Know: In 2005, Missy Elliott announced she was working on an autobiographical film about her life story. Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal were said to be producers of the film.
