Breakthrough: Scarface is one of the most influential and incisive MCs in hip hop history and is considered an icon of Southern rap music. Originally a member of Geto Boys, who scored nationally with their hit single “Mind Playin’ Tricks on Me,” off We Can’t Be Stopped (Rap-A-Lot/Priority, 1991), it was his solo work that solidified his stature. In 1991, he released his solo effort Mr. Scarface Is Back on Rap-A-Lot Records. It only peaked at No. 100 on The Billboard 200, but it was the beginning of a highly respected rap career. He has since recorded 11 solo albums and reunited with Geto Boys once.
Now You Know: In 2008, Scarface announced his retirement from hip hop—or, at least, his hip hop alias. He wants to broaden his musical horizons and step behind the scenes. Rumors of a funk album persist.
