Breakthrough: Shan's cousin is pioneering producer Marley Marl, and that relationship lead to a record deal with Cold Chillin' Records and a spot in the Juice Crew All-Stars. Shan first made noise over the classic rep-your-'hood anthem "The Bridge." MC Shan released three moderately successful solo albums, the debut solo effort, Down by Law (Cold Chillin', 1987), Born To Be Wild (Cold Chillin', 1988), and Play It Again Shan (Cold Chillin', 1989).

Now You Know: Shan's career was derailed by two furious diss tracks courtesy of KRS-One, "South Bronx" and "The Bridge Is Over", who took issue with Shan's neighborhood boasts on "The Bridge."
