Breakthrough: Common first gained recognition for his 1994 track ''I Used to Love H.E.R.,'' a metaphor about the commercial exploitation of hip hop, from his highly touted sophomore album, Resurrection (Relativity), released under the name Common Sense. Common's first gold album, Like Water for Chocolate (MCA, 2000), was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance, and his 2002 collabo with then girlfriend Erykah Badu, ''Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip Hop),'' from the Brown Sugar soundtrack, spent 37 weeks on the Billboard Top 40 Charts, four at No. 1. Common's later albums, Be (G.O.O.D./Geffen, 2005) and Finding Forever (G.O.O.D./Geffen, 2007), went gold.
Now You Know: Common's father, Lonnie Lynn, played in the American Basketball Association. When he was younger, Common was a ball boy for the NBA's Chicago Bulls.
