Breakthrough: A former soldier in the U.S. Army, Mystikal signed to Jive Records shortly after releasing his self-titled debut through local New Orleans independent Big Boy Records. Mystikal's major label debut, Mind of Mystikal, followed in 1995, and in 1997 he teamed up with Master P's No Limit Records for Unpredictable (No Limit/Jive). Although it lacked a true hit single, Unpredictable went platinum. Mystikal's second No Limit project, Ghetto Fabulous (No Limit/Jive, 1999), also went platinum, but it was his 2001 effort, Let's Get Ready (Jive), released after his split with No Limit, that established Mystikal as a national star. Featuring the hit singles "Shake Ya Ass" and "Danger," the album debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and went double platinum.

Now You Know: Mystikal's sister Michelle was fatally stabbed by her boyfriend in 1994; the rapper included a tribute song to her on every album released after her death. In 2003, Mystikal pleaded guilty to sexual battery and extortion. He is currently serving a six-year sentence in the Louisiana State Prison system.
