Young Jeezy
Name: Jay Jenkins
Reppin': Atlanta, GA
Breakthrough: After releasing two independent albums' Thuggin' Under the Influence (T.U.I.) and Come Shop Wit' Me-in 2001 and 2003, respectively, through his own imprint, Corporate Thugz Entertainment, Young Jeezy built a deafening street buzz on the back of the DJ Drama-hosted mixtapes Tha Streets Iz Watchin' (2004) and Trap or Die (2005). His song-stealing appearance on Gucci Mane's regional 2005 hit "So Icy" established Jeezy beyond the mixtape circuit, as did his prominent role in the Bad Boy project Boyz N da Hood, a rap collective comprised of Jeezy, Jody Breeze, Duke, and Big Gee. His solo debut, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 (Def Jam, 2005) spawned the hit, "Soul Survivor," featuring Akon, and went on to sell nearly 2 million copies.
Now You Know: Young Jeezy sparked a national controversy in 2005 when T-shirts adorned with his signature snowman logo'derived from his nickname The Snowman and alluding to his alleged crack cocaine dealing past'became ubiquitous in many inner city neighborhoods. CNN and USA Today, among other news outlets, picked up the story.
