Name: Lamont Coleman

Breakthrough: A lyrical legend in New York City, Big L was a member of the Diggin’ in the Crates (DITC) crew alongside Lord Finesse, Diamond D, O.C., Fat Joe, Buckwild, and others. Though his solo debut album, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous (Columbia/Sony, 1995), wasn’t a huge commercial smash, it did feature underground hits like “Put In On” and “M.V.P.” as well as appearances from up-and-coming rapper Cam’Ron on “8 Iz Enuff” and a pre-Reasonable Doubt (Roc-A-Fella, 1996) Jay-Z on “Da Graveyard.” Unfortunately, L was gunned down and killed in Harlem in February 1999 before his second album was completed and a posthumous album, The Big Picture (Rawkus/Priority), dropped in 2000.

Now You Know: In the early 1990s, Big L gathered a group of Harlem MCs, including Cam’Ron (then known as Killa Cam), Mase (then known as Murda Mase), McGruff, and Bloodshed, and formed the group Children of the Corn. However, the group never signed an official record deal and disbanded in the mid-’90s shortly after Bloodshed died in a car accident.
