Mase
Name: Mason Betha
Reppin': Harlem, NY
Breakthrough: After rapping alongside Cam’Ron (then known as Killa Cam) and Big L in the Harlem hip hop group Children of the Corn in the mid-1990s, Mase launched a solo career and signed with Puff Daddy’s Bad Boy Records. He initially built his buzz by guest appearing on tracks like The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo Money, Mo Problems” from 1997’s Life After Death (Bad Boy). In 1997, he released his solo debut, Harlem World (Bad Boy), which rose to the top of The Billboard 200, thanks to the album’s lead single, “Feels So Good.”
Now You Know: In 1999, Mase announced that he was retiring from rap to pursue life as a pastor during an on-air interview with Hot 97 [WQHT-FM] personality Funkmaster Flex. He returned to the rap game twice after that (once with Bad Boy, once with 50 Cent’s G Unit) but he continues to preach at a church in Atlanta.
