Heavy D
Name: Dwight Myers
Reppin': Mount Vernon, NY
Breakthrough: Heavy D & the Boyz were the first artists signed to Andre Harrell’s Uptown Records in 1986. The Jamaica-born Hev mixed R&B, funk, reggae and pop into his party-driven songs, like “Mr. Big Stuff” and “The Overweight Lover's in the House.” With the Boyz he released the platinum-selling Big Tyme in 1989, mixing hardcore boom bap from producer Marley Marl with New Jack Swing from that sub-genre’s guru Teddy Riley. Heavy D also composed and performed the theme songs for the television shows In Living Color (Fox), Mad TV (Fox), and The Tracy Morgan Show (NBC) and began a prolific acting career, appearing in the 1999 film Life (Universal) and 2002’s Big Trouble (Touchstone).
Now You Know: The late Trouble T. Roy, a member of Heavy D & The Boyz, was the inspiration for the classic hip hop tribute track, “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.),” by Pete Rock & CL Smooth.
