Name: Gary Grice

Reppin': Brooklyn, NY

Breakthrough: Prior to helping his cousins RZA and Ol’ Dirty Bastard found the Wu-Tang Clan, GZA signed with Cold Chillin’ Records in the early 1990s and released his solo debut album, Words From the Genius (Cold Chillin’/Reprise, 1991). However, when the album failed to take off, he settled into his position as one of the nine Wu-Tang members and helped create the group’s classic debut Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers (Loud, 1993), even dropping a solo song on the album called “Clan in da Front.” After the album’s success, he released his classic sophomore album Liquid Swords (Geffen/MCA), which was produced entirely by RZA and eventually sold over a million copies.

Now You Know: In 2008, GZA publicly called out Soulja Boy through a series of YouTube videos, criticizing him for his lack of lyrical substance.
