Pharoahe Monch
Name: Troy Jamerson
Reppin': Queens, NY
Breakthrough: Pharoahe Monch made his debut in 1991 as one-half of the duo Organized Konfusion alongside Price Po. Although commercial success eluded them, their three albums, Organized Konfusion (Hollywood Basic/Elektra, 1991), Stress: The Extinction Agenda (Hollywood Basic/Elektra, 1994), and Equinox (Priority, 1997), all earned critical acclaim. After making several guest appearances on their Soundbombing series, Monch signed a solo deal with New York-based Rawkus Records, and his debut album, Internal Affairs (Rawkus/Priority, 1999), sold over 200,000 copies thanks to the success of his crunchy hit single “Simon Says.”
Now You Know: Monch was a high school nickname inspired by a bad haircut; he picked up “Pharoahe” after studying Egyptian history in college.
