Breakthrough: Discovered by Too $hort, Spice 1 became known as one of the hardest gangsta rappers coming out of the Bay Area in the early-to-mid-’90s. Although he never achieved breakout commercial success, Spice 1 put together a string of gold albums while with Jive Records, including his dark debut, Spice 1 (Jive, 1992), 187 He Wrote (Jive, 1993), and AmeriKKKa’s Nightmare (Jive, 1994), which featured appearances by 2Pac, Method Man, and E-40. His biggest hit was the 187 He Wrote single “Trigga Gots No Heart,” which was also appeared on the soundtrack to the film Menace II Society (New Line, 1993).
Now You Know: Although made his mark reppin’ the Bay Area, Spice 1 was born in Texas. In December 2007 Spice was shot outside of his parents Hayward home as he slept in his car. He suffered a collapsed lung. The motive was believed to be robbery.
