Breakthrough: Run is frontman of Run-D.M.C., which also featured DMC and the late Jam Master Jay, arguably the greatest and most influential hip hop group of all time. The confrontational battle raps and stripped-down drums of their debut single, "Sucka MCs," not to mention the group's streetwise, on-the-block attire, almost immediately deaded the old-school era of disco-jacking party rap. Later on, the ahead-of-its-time rap-rock mash-up "Walk This Way," which propelled Raising Hell (Profile/Arista, 1986) to No. 1, a first for rap, proved that hip hop was a marketable, mainstream-ready genre.
