Breakthrough: Although her debut album, Lyte as a Rock (First Priority/Atlantic, 1988), established her as a force on the mic, Lyte didn't really arrive until the single "Ruffneck," off her 1993 album Ain't No Other (First Priority/Atlantic), was certified gold, making her the first female MC to reach that mark.
Now You Know: MC Lyte started rapping when she was 12 years old and landed a recording contract with First Priority Music in 1986.
