Breakthrough: The first female rapper to ever land a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Lil’ Kim was discovered in Brooklyn by The Notorious B.I.G. in the 1990s and invited to join his group Junior M.A.F.I.A. After grabbing attention with her raunchy verses on “Get Money” and “Player’s Anthem” off the group’s debut album, Conspiracy (Undeas/Big Beat, 1995), she catapulted herself into a successful solo career. Her double-platinum solo debut, Hard Core (Undeas/Big Beat), was praised both critically and commercially due to her overtly sexual lyrics on songs like “No Time” and “Crush On You.”
Now You Know: In July 2005, Lil’ Kim was sentenced to one year and a day in federal prison after she was convicted on counts of conspiracy and perjury for lying to a grand jury about a shooting involving her manager and bodyguard outside the Hot 97 [WQHT-FM] radio station in New York City. She served 10 months in prison.
