Breakthrough: After helping Grandmaster Flash write portions of his groundbreaking 1982 album, The Message (Sugar Hill), as a member of the Furious Five, Melle Mel recorded the classic single “White Lines (Don’t Do It)” (Sugar Hill, 1983). The antidrug anthem peaked at No. 47 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart but remains a cult classic today.
Now You Know: The video for “White Lines (Don’t Do It)” was shot by then unknown New York University film student Spike Lee and starred the then up-and-coming actor Laurence Fishburne.
