Breakthrough: In 1997, DMX signed with Def Jam and built a steady buzz through appearances on LL Cool J’s “4, 3, 2, 1,” Mase’s “24 Hours To Live,” and The LOX’s “Money, Power, Respect.” But it was the debut of his major-label single “Get at Me Dog” in 1998 that got people talking. By the end of the year, he released two multiplatinum albums, including his stellar debut, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot (Ruff Ryders/Def Jam), and his follow-up album, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood (Ruff Ryders/Def Jam).
Now You Know: In 2003, DMX claimed he was retiring from rap to preach more in the church. However, Mase told him to wait for God’s calling and continue rapping.
