The Dark Man X speaks on jail, music, and the fact that he’s still standing in VIBE's The Best Rapper Ever

THE BEST RAPPER EVER: Round Three Begins
Lil Wayne barely made the cut of 32, Jay-Z and Kanye West face off
Rakim
Name: William Griffin Jr.
Reppin': Long Island, NY
Breakthrough: Considered by many hip hop historians as the greatest MC of all-time, Rakim and DJ/producer Eric B. released 1987’s game-changing Paid In Full (4th & B’Way/Island). The influential hip hop giant is credited with expanding the vocabulary of rap by utilizing highly-conceived metaphors, gritty and complex narratives, and Five Percent Nation Islamic ideology. Indeed, it’s nearly impossible to overstate Rakim’s immense effect on the evolution of hip hop from party/B-Boy platform to serious lyrical art form.
Now You Know: Rakim’s aunt is 1950s R&B luminary Ruth Brown.

Hands down 1 of the Best who ever picked up a pen and a mic. The Microphone Fiend gave birth to the lyricism of today's true hip-hop mcs. Young ones need to know the history. There were mcs before Biggie, Pac, Jay-Z and Wayne.
