Kool Keith
Name: Keith Thornton
Reppin': Bronx, NY
Breakthrough: As a member of the groundbreaking rhyme clique Ultramagnetic MC’s, Kool Keith, along with Ced Gee, TR Love and Moe Love, received acclaim for their debut, Critical Beatdown (Next Plateau, 1988). With its off-beat rhyme patterns—led by off-center wordsmith Kool Keith—the album became one of the first rap releases to use the chopped-up record samples that became emblematic of hip hop’s golden age. In 1995, Keith also took on the twisted alias Doctor Octagon on his brazen solo project Dr. Octagonecologyst (Bulk). The genre-busting concept album (Kool Keith played the role of an extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist) boldly mixed hip hop, trip hop and electronic music and received a tremendous reception at college rock radio.
Now You Know: Kool Keith formed the unlikely duo Analog Brothers with West Coast gangsta rap pioneer Ice-T in 2000. The pair dropped the collaboration Pimp To Eat (Ground Control).
