Masta Ace
Name: Duval Clear
Reppin': Brooklyn, NY
Breakthrough: As a member of the powerful rhyme group The Juice Crew, Masta Ace more than held his own in a lineup that included Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Craig G, Roxanne Shanté and producer Marley Marl. After a memorable showing on the crew’s classic 1988 posse cut “The Symphony,” he released his debut, Take A Look Around (Cold Chillin’/Warner Bros., 1990), and followed it up with his stellar sophomore album, Slaughtahouse (Delicious Vinyl, 1993). The second album mixed West Coast and East Coast production styles and included the car anthem “Jeep Ass Niguh” and 808-bass shaker “Born To Roll,” which became a surprise hit and reached the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Now You Know: Masta Ace’s first album was released directly through Marley Marl’s Cold Chillin’ Records.
