Breakthrough: In 1995, AZ’s solo album Doe or Die (EMI) went gold and spent 18 weeks on the Billboard R&B and Hip Hop Top 40 charts, thanks to the success of his first single, “Sugar Hill.” The fierce rhymer also drew acclaim as a member of the hip hop supergroup The Firm alongside Nas, Nature, and Foxy Brown. But it was his introduction on “Life’s A Bitch,” from Nas’ legendary debut Illmatic (Ill Will/Columbia, 1994), that first made AZ a household name.
Now You Know: A longtime friend of Nas, AZ was the only rapper to make a guest appearance on Illmatic.
