Breakthrough: Credited with coining the term “hip hop,” Cowboy was the first MC to officially team up with Grandmaster Flash to form the group that would ultimately become Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (collectively Grandmaster Flash, Cowboy, Scorpio, Melle Mel, Kid Creole, and Raheim). The group’s 1982 hit, “The Message,” released by Sugar Hill Records, is widely regarded as one the most influential records in hip hop history.
Now You Know: Cowboy died on September 8, 1989, reportedly from an overdose of crack cocaine. He was 28.
