Grand Puba
Name: Maxwell Dixon
Reppin': New Rochelle, NY
Breakthrough: Shortly after his original group Masters of Ceremony disbanded following the release of its debut, Dynamite (1988), Grand Puba teamed up with Lord Jamar, Sadat X, and DJ Alamo, to form the group Brand Nubian. Although Brand Nubian never achieved breakout commercial success, the group’s debut One For All (Elektra, 1990), featured several rap hits, including “Slow Down,” “All For One,” and “Wake Up.” In 1992, Puba left Brand Nubian to pursue a solo career (he would later reconnect with the group). His solo debut Reel to Reel (Elektra), featured the single, “360° (What Goes Around),” which spent three weeks in the Billboard Top 40.
Now You Know: Grand Puba is a member of the Nation of Islam, and he has courted controversy throughout his career by rapping about his militant beliefs.
