Breakthrough: Long before he started filming blockbuster Hollywood films, Will Smith was one-half of the hip hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. In 1985, Smith met Jeff at a house party in their hometown of Philly and, by 1987, they released their debut album, Rock the House (Jive), which sold more than 300,000 copies. But the pair achieved their breakout success in 1989 with the release of their second album, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper (Jive, 1988), which featured the smash single, “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” The song won the 1989 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance. They released three more well-received studio albums before disbanding in 1993. Smith continued recording as a solo artist in 1997 when he dropped Big Willie Style (Columbia), featuring the singles “Getting’ Jiggy Wit It,” “Miami,” and “Just the Two of Us.”
Now You Know: As a teenager, Will Smith was offered a scholarship to a pre-engineering program at MIT. However, he opted to pursue a career in music instead and turned down the offer.
