Lauryn Hill
Name: Lauryn Hill
Reppin': South Orange, NJ
Breakthrough: While she’s been missing from the national spotlight for close to a decade now, Lauryn Hill could do no wrong in the 1990s. In 1994, she joined rappers Pras and Wyclef Jean to form the Fugees and released the group’s debut, Blunted on Reality (Ruffhouse). However, the group’s true success lays in their sophomore effort, The Score (Ruffhouse/Columbia), which sold 18 million albums worldwide, thanks to the singles “Ready Or Not,” “Fu-Gee-La,” and the Roberta Flack cover “Killing Me Softly.” Hill parlayed her success with the Fugees into the opportunity to complete her own solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (Ruffhouse/Columbia, 1998). The album featured the successful singles “Lost Ones,” “Ex-Factor,” and “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and was certified diamond with more than 10 million copies sold in the U.S. It also won five Grammy Awards in 1999.
Now You Know: Though they are not officially married, Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley, son of the late reggae music icon Bob Marley, have five children together.
