Breakthrough: A gritty, tough-nosed rapper handpicked by Jay-Z to join the Roc-A-Fella team, Beanie Sigel appeared on several DJ Clue mixtapes before releasing his debut album, The Truth (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam, 2000), which sold more than 500,000 copies and featured the Kanye West-produced title track. Sigel's second album, The Reason (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam, 2001), also went gold off the strength of the lead single, "Beanie (Mack B****)." It also marked the first appearance of his own rap conglomerate State Property.
Now You Know: Beanie Sigel's name derives from the street in South Philadelphia where he was raised, Sigel Street. It also pays homage to infamous gangster Bugsy Sigel.
