Breakthrough: Following a long lineage of stellar Brooklyn MCs, the Mighty Mos is best known as a conscious rapper. After independently releasing several critically-acclaimed 12-inch singles in the mid-1990s, Mos blew up alongside Rawkus Records labelmate Talib Kweli when the pair formed the group Black Star. Mos successfully went solo in 1999 when he dropped his debut, Black on Both Sides (Rawkus, 1999), featuring the hit “Umi Says.”

Now You Know: Along with a successful music career, Mos Def has also appeared in a slew of Hollywood films, including Cadillac Records (TriStar, 2008), The Italian Job (Paramount, 2003), Monster’s Ball (Lionsgate, 2001) and Brown Sugar (Twentieth Century Fox, 2002).
