Q Tip
Name: Jonathan Davis
Reppin': Queens, NY
Breakthrough: After making two guest appearances on the Jungle Brothers’ classic debut album, Straight Out the Jungle (Idlers/Warlock, 1988), Q-Tip joined forces with childhood friend Phife Dawg as well as Ali Shaheed Muhammad to form A Tribe Called Quest. Though their debut album People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm (Jive, 1990) was panned critically by some for being too experimental, it succeeded and went gold thanks to songs like “Can I Kick It?” and “Bonita Applebum.” The group’s follow-up albums, The Low End Theory (Jive, 1991) and Midnight Marauders (Jive, 1993), were both seen as hip hop classics. However, following two more group albums, Tribe disbanded and Q-Tip released his debut solo project, Amplified (Arista, 1999), which featured the hit singles “Vivrant Thing” and “Breathe and Stop.”
Now You Know: Aside from rapping, Q-Tip is also a well-respected DJ. He often spins at clubs in New York City under the name The Abstract.
