Talib Kweli
Name: Talib Kweli Greene
Reppin': Brooklyn, NY
Breakthrough: Alongside fellow Brooklyn MC Mos Def, Talib Kweli was one of the strongest lyricists of the late 1990s backpacker movement in New York City. In 1998, the duo collaborated to create the exceptional Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star (Rawkus/Priority, 2002), and in 2000, Kweli and producer DJ Hi-Tek coupled to form the group Reflection Eternal and released the critically-acclaimed Reflection Eternal: Train of Thought (Rawkus/Priority). But Kweli’s critical appeal didn’t match his commercial appeal until 2002 when he dropped his first solo album Quality (Rawkus/MCA), which featured the Kanye West-produced lead single “Get By.”
Now You Know: Talib Kweli’s first name means “student” or “seeker” in Arabic. His middle name means “true” in Swahili.
