Mic Burna’s parents urged him to attend church four times a week and encouraged him to be in the choir. But after hearing the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac, the former choirboy felt tugged in a different direction. “I believe in God, but my parents pushed me so hard that it pulled me back,” he recalls. With a part-time gig at UPS, Burna now has time and privacy to master his craft. And people are starting to notice his talent. Local radio picked up “U Can Bounce,” the thumping title track to his homegrown EP, which showcases his knack for witty wordplay: “I’m a big fish, you a guppy / She might be at my house gettin’ trained like a puppy.” These days, that’s the gospel according to Burna.
