D-Ave (né David Joseph)

June 15, 2006

Ave was introduced to music at age 4. That’s when his 14-year-old deejaying sister started breaking records at local neighborhood parties, and it didn’t take long for D-Ave to fall for hip hop himself. “I would sit outside her bedroom door while she would play records. Then I’d sneak in later and scratch on her turntables.” Ever since, he’s been making his own moves. In high school, D-Ave often traveled to Manhattan to visit his best friend’s sister, a project manager for Arista Records, who invited him to music industry events. It wasn’t long before he’d logged his first studio hours and adopted what he calls an eclectic street style. “I’m inspired by the world and everything that surrounds me,” says D-Ave, now a student at Long Island University. And his observations provide the inspiration for his rhymes. On “Cold Nights, Ghetto Pain,” D-Ave demonstrates an ability to disperse socially conscious ideas through a steady stream of clever wordplay. That’s enough to make his big sister proud.

SEND US YOUR DEMO.
If you're an unsigned artist, here's your chance to shine! Beginning with the September 2004 issue, VIBE will feature an unsigned act in our monthly Free Agent column. After reviewing submissions, a commit tee of editors will pick the artist/group to be featured as the "Vibe Free Agent" of the month. In addition to national exposure in the magazine, the Free Agent's music will be featured on our Web site, vibe.com, where VIBE readers will rate the music, on a scale of 1 to 5, and give their feedback. If you've got what it takes, and aren't afraid to hear what others have to say, send in your demo. Maybe you'll be VIBE's next Free Agent.

Rules:
To qualify, the artist/group must not be signed to a major label or its imprint, or have independent distribution. Selling your music locally or on a Web site is permissible.
