There was a place where I used to develop my film back then. And the lady there used to print for Helmut Newton. She asked, “Do you mind if I throw you an exhibition here at the lab?”
At that time I had about 100 proof sheets that I had never bothered to have blown up. She said she would print them for me. So then she had this art show and I wound up selling like eight out of 11 pictures that she printed and everybody loved them. She said she never had sold that many photos before. And there were big people there–like celebrities, and she told me that I should really think about taking it more seriously. And after that I did.
