Give Electronic Arts props — as always, the software industry’s leading university-level gridiron simulation remains every bit as pretty – and twice as perky – as a freshman cheerleader. Never mind how well the simulation captures the pomp and pageantry of college athletics, though… in a first for gaming, it’s the pressure you’ll be most concerned with this season. Witness Race for the Heisman mode, the title’s most meaningful addition, where you play a high-school hero courting scholarships and stardom alike. Ace spring drills, score a spot on schools like Ole Miss or Penn State’s squads, and it’s officially on; the hotter your performance, the more hype you’ll generate. As a so-called “impact player” – superstar athletes capable of crushing opponents using all-new breakaway moves like superhuman stiff-arms and jukes – it’s on you to lead your team to victory. Further improvements such as enhanced audiovisuals (witness screaming, sign-waving fans), catchier commentary and all-new mini-games merely seal the deal. Storm the field, and you’ll feel your heart race with every Hail Mary and spine tingle as crowd chants literally shake the stadium. Award-winning characters can even be repurposed as coaches or imported into Madden NFL 06, when you’re ready to (cough) graduate onto something tougher. Now that’s what we call a kick in the butt pads. Read our latest game reviews:
