But show some respect; fanning the hammer on your pistol while wandering haunted cemeteries and saloons or thundering along on horseback is always frighteningly good fun. Thanks to solid controls and intelligent enemies — ball-busting banshees, bile-spitting blobs, and scythe-wielding skeletons — plus a vaguely sadomasochistic presentation. (Seriously… backgrounds rock more religious imagery than the jeweler who sold you your Jesus piece.) Granted, the storyline — chronicling headliner Jericho Cross' exploits as he joins a secret society and saves humanity from bloodsucking badass Lazarus – is stereotypical, as is gameplay itself. Anyone seeking atmospheric shootouts served up in straightforward, do-or-die fashion won't be disappointed, though. Pile on added features like occasional ethical dilemmas which affect character development depending on how you approach them, and paranormal powers such as double-jump capabilities, or essence-draining attacks — and it’s a done deal. Don't go in anticipating another Doom 3, mind you scenarios/settings are more pleasant than panic-inducing. Still, as pure entertainment value goes, take our word. It's one top-notch tale from the crypt.
