Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects

Storyline: It's a good idea on paper: take everyone's favorite Marvel Comics superheroes and give them all of their mutant superpowers and let them battle each other in a one-on-one fighter. Everyone from Wolverine to Daredevil to Spider Man to Venom is featured in the game, so it has to be hot right? Not so fast. The game was billed as a fighter in the same vein as something like Marvel vs. Capcom or Tekken, but the final result is very far from that. There are two modes: Story mode and Versus Mode. Versus Mode allows you to choose a character and battle the computer or a friend one-on-one, but the catch is you have to finish the story mode to be able to get all the characters available. Story Mode lets you control a variety of characters as you battle in the streets of New York against an alien race (The Imperfects) and try to take over the world. Sounds like a tight game, but wait… Audio/Visual: The graphics look great and have the colorful comic book feel to it. The shading makes it look like your comic book has come to life, and the same can be said with the various environments on the streets of New York and on the rooftops of Manhattan. The animations are good as well with and almost anything on the screen is capable of being destructed. The voice-acting isn't Oscar-worthy but it works for what the game is — seeing there isn't too much dialogue. Controls: This is where the game is sub par. For most fighters, you have two punch buttons, two kick buttons, some cool combos and some special moves using a weapon or something akin to a weapon. Each character usually has its own set of moves with different combinations of buttons and directions. Well, Marvel Nemesis has none of that. The control is one punch/kick button, a jump button, a block button and a throw button. You can do a special move or two with the triggers, but the moves are very limiting and it's basically the same with each character except you get different results. You press attack and the trigger, and Storm will conjure some lightning but if you do the exact same combo with Elektra she'll throw her weapons. It basically just turns into a button mashing contest. left Hotness: The great art and look of the game plus the ability to play some Marvel characters who haven't gotten the video game treatment yet but... Wackness: The game play is so lackluster. There's no lasting appeal. If EA would have marketed the game as what it is, a "beat 'em up fighter," the disappointment wouldn't be so big. They have a good idea, maybe next time they’ll execute it better. Read our latest game reviews:
