Since its debut, it’s been remade several times for home systems. Today, Midway Games is taking a shot at reinventing it for the PS2.
Audio/Visual: Even though I can guarantee it took lots of time and effort to put this game together, it really looks like a rushed job. Granted, the game is a remake of a classic 80’s arcade game, but the graphics are sub par in comparison to other games and seem a bit outdated. They tried to give it the same feel as the original with a sort of side-scrolling screen mixed with 3D graphics, but you can’t roam around the city at all. There is, however, potential for good game here. Audio-wise, it’s your basic crash and explosion here and there plus a few growls from the monsters and yells from folks on the streets.
Controls: The controls have a bit of a learning curve. On the old school game, pressing up got you to start climbing the building, but now pressing up just takes you to the back on the scene. Now it seems the best way to get on the building is to jump onto it and hope that you stick. The destruction controls aren’t too bad once you figure how to grab things, throw them or eat them.
Hotness: The game is only $20. Included with the game are the original Rampage and Rampage World Tour. In addition, the game has 30 different monsters to choose from and unlock.
Wackness: Because the monsters can't roam freely up and down the streets, the visuals are real lackluster and the game tends to get boring after an hour.
