Daniel Alarcon: The Storyteller

The author of War by Candlelight and Lost City Radio. From our 2007 Juice list.

Maybe it's because he doesn't have cable - and his TV set cost $60. At 28, Alarcón's stunning collection, War by Candlelight (HarperCollins) was published. With this year came the coolly heartbreaking novel Lost City Radio, and if he hasn't been called the voice of a generation a zillion times since, our counting is off. "I never considered that this wouldn't happen," he says. "It was just stupid confidence. Worked out though, I guess." He spends his time playing soccer, listening to Charles Mingus and Eddie Palmieri - and writing like we're at the desperate end of all the ways things have ever been. "I want," says Alarcón, with a bracing lack of irony, "to portray some of the truth and beauty and horror of what it means to be alive right now." And we'll be reading. I have a lot of affection for this red head wrap that every girl I ever dated said looks ridiculous. Like Linus's little blanket. PERSON I ADMIRE MOST/PERSON WHO TAUGHT ME HOW TO HAVE JUICE:
I've had a lot of mentors. Francisco Goldman is one. He is fearless as an artist and reporter, and a model to follow. 5 YEARS FROM NOW, MY GOAL IS...
I want to write books that you'll remember. Books that I'm proud of. BIGGEST PROBLEM FACING OUR GENERATION:
The coming environmental apocalypse will trump all issues of race and class. The fact that everyone's going to be affected by that problem is either going to create a global war, or push us to see beyond those things. When we all don't know where we can get a glass of water. FAVORITE BOOK, AND WHY:
Most recently? Savage Detectives by Roberto Balano from Chile. It is an audacious and beautiful way to tell a story- the wandering and displacement that happened to a certain generation of Latin Americans. FAVORITE MOVIE, AND WHY:
The Piano Teacher. It's the worse date movie. If you saw it, there would be no second date.
