Friday Night Lights star: a smash indeed. From our September 2007 Juice list.

Ambition, charm, dimples: Three reasons we love the fetching Gaius Charles, who's continuing to catch our fancy as Brian "Smash" Williams, the star high-school running back on NBC's critically acclaimed series Friday Night Lights. With a veteran's command, Charles has guided his character thorough a steroid addiction, a coach's racism, and a girlfriend with bipolar disorder. "There’s an incredible responsibility in playing a sensational role like Smash," says Charles, who first got excited about acting after seeing how committed his grandmother was to her favorite soap operas. "Black characters don't often get to show the entire story." For more interviews from our Juice list, click here. NAME: Gaius Charles
AGE: 24
BORN : Brooklyn, NY (grew up in Teaneck, NJ)
RESIDES: Austin, TX PERSONAL MOTTO:
"I don't have the luxury of doubt." SOMETHING I DO EVERY DAY FOR SANITY:
"We film guerilla style. We film as much like a documentary as we can, which I think helps to get that grittiness. There's literally no down time. Your scene is up, you shoot all the angles, you film it, and you go home unless you're in the next scene. I'm getting into boxing, down here which is good cause they have a couple of really well known boxing gyms but other than that, not much."
PLACE WHERE I'M MOST PRODUCTIVE:
"This gonna sound like a double entendre - I don't mean it to be, but - in the bedroom! [laughs] I set up like an office in my bedroom because it's like my sanctuary. I just wake up, look out the window, I have a real nice picture window. You can honestly also find me wherever I can take my computer and get a wi-fi connection. I'm a mobile office. I'm on hiatus right now, and I like to write and do other things, so you get inspired so random that you always wanna have your laptop ready, be on your grind. That's something that comes from the NY mentality - I always have my office in my backpack. I'm working on a script I'm really excited about. I'm very adamant about bringing my own stories to the screen." FAVORITE ARTICLE OF CLOTHING/GOOD LUCK CHARM:
"I would say that I'm a bum, but that's not very good for my public image. [laughs] I have been wearing this black army cap with a really small brim. I've had that hat with me for the last four years or so and everywhere I go I'm wearing that hat. It's not even about the look anymore. It's just about, that's my hat." PERSON I ADMIRE MOST :
"Sydney Poitier. His passion, the man he was, how charismatic he was - but it was more than charisma. Seeing a black man with those attributes back in the day was something extra special. He was the greatest black actor to ever live. That was my first influence of somebody with Juice." 5 YEARS AGO, MY GOAL WAS... :
"I was 19. It was really to graduate college and launch my career. Hey, got that!" 5 YEARS FROM NOW, MY GOAL IS. . .:
"I'll be 29, gollyyy! My goal five years from now is really, how do I say this, I wanna be in control of my career. I wanna be able to take a role or pass on it. I wanna create and produce my own stories. I wanna have a voice in the industry, a voice that's respected, a voice that can guide people toward positive things. I wanna be a beacon of light and hope to people inside and outside the industry. I don't want to just continue to rise in notoriety and just not cede that power, that opportunity to really be a role model. It's interesting to me that people say they're not a role model but I think as soon as you're embraced as a celebrity or someone in the spotlight, you are a role model. My goal is to really use that to better the world around me." FAVORITE BOOK, AND WHY:
"The Audacity of Hope and Letters from My Father - Barack Obama's books. I'm all about Barack Obama right now. I'm operating right now like he is the President. I'm just shutting everybody else down - I'm like, 'What is Barack saying about the issues?' Because he is definitely one of my heroes and one of the role models I look to in life and in politics, certainly. Letters from My Father was very honest, incredibly introspective."
