New Yorkers Spike Lee and Robert De Niro are teaming up to create their own Showtime series about one of the most notorious areas of Lower Manhattan.

The two are currently in the creation stage of a primetime show called Alphaville, which is based on Alphabet City.

Alphabet City, which is also known as Loisaida, is now more commonly referred to as simply the East Village. The area received Hollywood recognition as the set for De Niro’s Taxi Driver, and the musical Rent.

The series will focus on the Village in the 80s, an artistic enclave of Latinos and blacks, that became a hub for hip-hop and a bedrock for crime.

Acclaimed Hollywood writer John Ridley has been tapped as the chief writer of the show, and De Niro and Lee will serve as executive producers. -Linda Hobbs
