Erykah Badu’s A&R Speaks On “Strawberry Incense”

Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah: Return of The Ankh (due out March 30) is quickly shaping up to be one of 2010’s albums of the year. Soulful, bare bones tracks like “Window Seat” “Agitation,” and “Don’t Be Long” show a surprising return to Badu’s jazzier, live feel of her 1997 classic debut Baduizm. Now the latest song to hit the Net is the dreamy cut “Strawberry Incense.”  The Madlib-produced instrumental, which features a harp and the weird-pitched theremin, was originally supposed to feature Badu’s musicianship on the strings. “She was going to play the harp on the song,” says the left field singer’s A&R man Kay K. Rosemond. “But she changed her mind at the last minute.” Hey, it’s Badu’s prerogative. We’re just enjoying the ride. —Keith Murphy
