Although Limelite, Luv & Nightclubz is her fourth album, Da Brat is stuck at the same club she’s been tearing up since ’94’s Funkdafied. She’s still puffing blunts and guzzling liquor. She still hoards luxury items. And she still takes braggadocio to Roxanne Shanté–like proportions. But coupled with a dynamic beat, that round-the-way quality makes Da Brat’s music a guilty pleasure at times. Consider the bass-thick booty shaker “Boom,” a retread of MC Luscious’s “Boom! I Got Your Boyfriend.” You can’t help rooting for the Chi-Town antihero when she tells a rival, “Yeah, I fucked your boyfriend. Diligently, bitch.” Da Brat flavors otherwise unremarkable music. On “I Was the One,” an airy, adult contemporary R&B track, she recalls a constricting relationship: “I cooked and cleaned like a Hebrew slave till I got blisters / A modern-day Miss Celie blues and he was my Mister.” But for every clever line, there’s a lackluster one like, “I’m on fire like a cigarette.” For every “Boom,” there’s an “In Love Wit Chu,” the trite lead single. Until Da Brat frees herself from the confines of the club, she’ll remain a one-dimensional act.
