Thalia wants you to know she's a real around-the-way girl from the block. At least that's the overwhelming musical message on the Mexican diva's self-titled English-language debut. The 14-song collection is filled with midtempo, R&B flavored songs. Rapper Fat Joe even pops up on "I Want You," the breezy first single. But this is not the singer whose last three Spanish-language albums have made her an international superstar and whose gothed-out rockera video for "A Quien Le Importa?" is currently in heavy rotation south of the border. Gone are the fiery, hip-swiveling rhythms of songs such as "Mujer Latina" and "Arrasando," which effortlessly blended independent-woman themes with Thalia's own sexy persona. Here, her personality is overwhelmed by songwriting cliché and copycat beats looking to take her to the upper echelons of Anglo pop stardom. The album's sole bright spots come via old material -- the wistful ballad "Closer to You" and a scorching remix of "The Mexican" -- featured on last year's Spanish-language album. Something really did get lost in translation.
