Dianne Reeves’s gently burnished contralto shimmers throughout the 10 nearly flawless tracks of this album. Paired with veteran producer Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Norah Jones), she offers a passionately restrained program of jazz standards—soaring especially on “Skylark”— with simpatico accompaniment from her working rhythm section (and an exquisite cameo from trumpeter Nicholas Payton on “You Go to My Head”). The Detroit-born Reeves, 46, who has paid her dues, just keeps getting better. Her last two albums won Grammys. And this Moonlight shines even brighter.
