When it comes to making music with his mouth, no one can be him or see him. Though his career saw its peak in the late ’80s, Juice Crew jester Biz Markie will forever personify hip hop’s cheeky spirit. As a result–despite stepping into the vastly different world of rap–Biz remains a true showstoppin’, party-rockin’ master of ceremonies. And Weekend Warrior is a testament to his effortless yet addictive style. Combining the silly punch lines and simple flow that endeared him to hip hoppers well over a decade ago with tail-feather-shaking contemporary beats, Biz has made an LP of new old-school rap.
Exemplifying the unlikely but effective union is “So Funkay,” a bass-heavy, percussion-driven track on which the B-I-Z drops typically lighthearted lines like, “Car, jewels, crib, yeah, what about it? / Been a hot boy since Tears for Fears made ‘Shout’ it.” He even rekindles the cute narrative style of his one crossover hit, “Just a Friend,” on the aptly titled “Bad Day.”
Weekend Warrior surely won’t change rap, but it just might make like the Treacherous Three and remind hip hop heads to have, have, have fun!
