With Chingy being the Lou’s new hot boy, it’s time for Nelly to bring the heat. The Reinvention may just be a good excuse to repackage his megahits, but there’s enough grist to keep the mill running until the next studio album.
David Banner’s crunkafied mixes of “E.I.” and “Air Force Ones” stay truest to The Reinvention title, successfully melding Midwest bounce into Dirty South funk. Elsewhere, Ronald Isley puts the pimp in “Pimp Juice,” Jermaine Dupri melts the cheese off “Dilemma,” and producer Jay E one-ups the Neptunes by adding funky instrumentation to “Hot in Herre.” Even Nelly’s karaoke treatment of John Mayer’s “No Such Thing” on “Ride Wit Me” works, if only for its blunted inanity. Both new cuts, including The People’s Court theme–sampling “Iz U,” are potential hits.
Still, some songs are better left alone. With its slapped-on E-40 verse, “Country Grammar” is lazy mix-tape fodder, and the reworking of St. Lunatics’ “Groovin’ Tonight” is no less forgettable than the original. But Nelly's got his formula. And if it ain't broke, you can always remix it.
