If too many cooks can spoil a broth, then too many guest stars can ruin a hip hop album. While the reward of crossover fans tempts many second-rate MCs to risk being outshined by their supporting casts, Rah Digga makes sure her raspy vocals remain the center of attention on her sophomore CD—even with all the A-list cameos.
As in a Tarantino flick, each of Digga’s costars offers an inspired performance. Ghostface rips the grimy “Intro,” as Snoop Dogg smoothly izzles his way through “Hot Tub.” On “Street People,” Digga, Joe Budden, and Young Zee form a rowdy, all-Jersey cipher, and Lloyd Banks provides a witty foil on “Party Ova Here.” The strongest cuts are ladies-only affairs: Mary J. Blige croons the hook over DJ Scratch’s dusty piano sample on “On the Move,” while Missy and Eve liven up the remix of “Party & Bullshit 2003.”
The album drags on the earnest but heavy-handed tribute songs “Miss You” and “You Will Never Know (Sativa’s Song).” But through it all, Digga’s distinct voice and witty punch lines prevail, confirming her solo mettle and proving that she’s the only MC running this show.
