On its fifth album, Silk appears to be stuck in an R&B time warp, somewhere in the bump-and grind mid-’90s. Mostly produced by Darrell “Delite” Allamby, Silktime sounds hopelessly dated, as evidenced by the spaceage synth effects on “My Girl.” Their once seductive grooves are ragged on the plodding tracks. The title song takes you back to when the quartet distinguished itself by fusing lascivious lyrics to doo-wop harmonies and bombastic beats. But groups like112 have long since taken that formula to edgier heights. Silktime is just too smooth for its own good.
