The so-called neo-soul movement has turned out too many youngbloods sanging just a bit too much like Stevie, Marvin, or Smokey. Thankfully, Ricky Fanté’s debut, Rewind, takes the road less traveled—the grittier, bumpier one paved by Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.

Though the original songs by Fanté and Jesse Harris (Norah Jones’s Grammy winning “Don’t Know Why”) jack classic Memphis Soul melodies and horn/vocal arrangements, the raw immediacy and emotional gravitas his voice lends to “It Ain’t Easy,” “A Woman’s Touch,” and “He Don’t Love You,” guarantees that Rewind sounds fresher than yesterday.
