You may (or may not) remember Allen Anthony as half of the ’97 R&B duo Christión. With Oakland International, it’s even less likely you’ll remember him as a soloist. Even on the mildly soulful “Hustlin’,” Anthony struggles to find a comfortable range. When flexing his falsetto, as on the Prince-ly “Lady Baby,” he shines, albeit briefly. But when plunging into tenor territory (“She”), the result is a string of dissonant notes. And without any familial support—the Roc’s marquee talents are conspicuously absent—Anthony’s left high and dry.
