Stock supplies and lock yourself indoors— a code-red terror alert is imminent! Despite the death of legendary lyricist Big Pun, Terror Squad remarkably remains one of the strongest cells in hip hop, and True Story is no idle threat. Fat Joe deftly manages the crew, achieving popular appeal while forsaking the saccharine singles that earned him recognition post-Pun. On “Lean Back,” Scott Storch’s full-bodied club banger, Joe makes bodies rock while venting, “These faggot niggas even turned gang signs commercial / Lil’ Bow Wow throwin’ it up / B2K Crip walkin’ like that’s what’s up.” Revisiting quotables in multiples, Lord Finesse resurrects Big L and Big Pun with electric guitar on “Bring ’Em Back.” Curbside crooner Tony Sunshine lightens the mood on DJ Khalid’s somber “Nuthing’s Gonna Stop Me,” trading places with Joe, who does his best R. Kelly rendition. A plethora of engaging arrangements—like Cool & Dre’s “Hum Drum” and Scram Jones’s “Rapid Fire,” where Remy hangs tight with the high-octane bounce beat—spurs the Terror Squad to dangerous levels. Prepare for the worst.
